British Citizenship

You can become a British citizen either by birth or you can apply for naturalisation if you are aged 18 or over.

If you have Indefinite Leave to Remain or EU settled status, you may be able to apply for British citizenship. Before you start your application, our professional legal team will support and guide you through the process to ensure you meet the requirements for British citizenship.

Who is eligible for British citizenship?

To apply for British citizenship, you need to satisfy key criteria, such as:

  • Being at least 18 years old
  • Living continuously in the UK for a minimum of 5 years
  • Having Indefinite Leave to Remain for at least 12 months
  • Not being absent from the UK for more than 450 days in the 5 years before you apply, or for 90 days in the previous 12 months before your application
  • Passing the Life in the UK test
  • Satisfying an English language requirement
  • Having no criminal record and no history of bankruptcy

When preparing your application for British citizenship you will need to include a number of documents to prove you meet this criteria. Expert Law’s immigration lawyers can help you understand which documents are accepted by the Home Office and how you can get them.

What rights does British citizenship offer?

Becoming a British citizen allows you the rights stated in the British Nationality Act 1981. This means you can:

  • Live and work permanently in the UK
  • Vote in UK referendums and general elections
  • Stand for Parliament in the UK
  • Be afforded overseas protection

If you are granted British citizenship, you may be able to hold dual nationality along with any current non-UK citizenship you are in possession of. Not all countries permit dual nationality, and our immigration team can assess your rights to see if this is possible for you.
